Abutilon

Botanical name - Abutilon

Common name - Flowering Maple, Chinese Lantern, Chinese Bellflower

Description - Evergreen shrub

Sunset zone(s) - 8, 9, 12-24; H1, H2

Exposure - Full shade in hottest climates, Morning sun to partial sun on coast. Protect from wind and coastal exposure

Water requirements - Moderate to regular water

General Information - Abutilon is native to warmer regions of the world especially South America. Abutilon has very showy bell shaped flowers. Hybrids are the most well known of these flowering maples and these can reach 10 feet high and 8 to 10 feet wide. They have broad maple like leaves with drooping bell shaped flowers in white, yellow, pink or red. The main bloom season is late spring and summer, but the white and yellow forms often bloom continuously

Popular Hybrids - Bartley Schwartz, Clementine, Crimson Belle, Dwarf Red, Kentish Belle, Linda Vista Peach, Mobile Pink, Moonchimes

Nursery Notes - Keep an eye out for Whitefly and Scale on Abutilon. In colder climates, Abutilon can be grown, but will need to spend the winter indoors, so planting it in a container may be a good idea. Use an all purpose fertilizer. Prune back by 30% in late winter to stimulate new growth and blooms. Prevent limbs from becoming leggy by pruning lightly through the growing season.
