Deer

Deer are the largest single pest here in Cambria California. Deer are very damaging to gardens in both the suburban and rural areas. Deer feed on many type of vegetables and flowers and almost seem to change their diet from season to season. They may eat the tender bark of trees, the new growth of shrubs and even the twigs of shrubs and trees. In some cases deer will eat the entire plant, but it is more common for them to eat the newer growth. Male deer will destroy young trees by rubbing antlers on the trunk, redwood trees are particularly vulnerable to this.

Suggested solution

There are a number of solutions for deer problems. There are several chemical treatments and deer repellents that can be sprayed on areas and plants. There are also several "home grown" remedies that may or may not work. Some of these home grown remedies include hanging small sacks of blood meal or human hair around trees, another method is to use perforated cans of mothballs hung from trees.

Here at Cambria Nursery, to keep deer away from the display gardens we use some of the chemical treatments and rely heavily on deer fences. Our landscaping company have built and installed deer fences around the nursery and display gardens. Our expert gardeners are also aware of what plants deer like to eat and plant accordingly.

How to prevent Deer

  • Fences are without doubt the best way to keep deer out. They should be at least 5 to 6 feet high and enclose the entire area, although in some areas 8 feet high deer fences are recommended. Wire mesh is the most common choice for deer fences and the wire should be stretched tight. It should also be tight to the ground, to discourage deer from attempting to get under the fence. If the ground is uneven then secure the mesh to the ground to stop the deer lifting the fence and crawling under. Deer have also been known to crawl under shrubs, so it is important to make sure that the shrubs are within the deer fences. Don't expect the shrub to act as a fence.

  • If it is not possible for you to erect a perimeter fence, then deer fences or deer cages around individual trees, shrubs or even beds should be considered. These again will need to be at least 6 feet high and will need to be a sturdy construction.

  • Young trees can be protected by positioning four pine poles equi-spaced around the tree, approximately 18" away from the trunk. These poles act as a barrier between the deer and the trunk and stop the deer getting close enough to rub its antlers on the tree trunk.
