Potting Soil
Potting soil is formulated especially for container gardens
and pots, both for indoor and outdoor use. Potting soil needs to allow roots to
grow easily; it should be fast draining; yet it should be capable of holding
moisture. Garden soil is too dense to be used in containers or pots. In fact,
potting soils usually don't contain soil. They are mixtures of soil less organic
materials such as ground bark, sphagnum peat moss and compost along with mineral
matter such as pumice and in some cases sand. Potting soil can be used in a variety
of applications both indoors and outdoors. The potting soil that we use and sell
here in Cambria is Gardeners Gold. Gardeners Gold Potting Soil is a
blend of natural ingredients, including worm castings, peat moss, topsoil and perlite.
These ingredients give it a good balance of moisture retention and airspace.
Plants that are to be planted in pots, containers or hanging baskets should be
planted in potting soil.

Additional items
-
Water holding polymers. You may wish to use a water-retaining
product, particularly if you are planting up hanging baskets. These products
are a granular polymer designed to reduce plant watering. You mix the granules
with the potting soil and when the pot is watered, the polymer absorbs water
and then releases it over a period of time; this can increase the time between
watering. It is important to mix the granules in the soil, as root hairs must
grow into the granules to extract water.
-
Time-release fertilizers. When planting in containers, it is a good
idea to add a time-release fertilizer into the potting soil.
-
Gardening Gloves. Don't forget to wear your gardening gloves, when
handling potting soil.
