General Information - Thunbergia is a tropical plant
that is a twining vine. The species has very showy flowers; the most well known
species is Alata or Black-Eyed Susan Vine. Some of the perennial variety grow fast
enough to bloom the first season and can be treated as annuals. Those grown as
perennials are evergreen in the mildest climates. Frost may kill the tops of the
vines in cooler areas. However, the roots will generally survive and will send
up new shoots.
Popular species
Alata. Black-Eyed Susan Vine, Zones 23,24 H2. This
species will rapidly grow to 10 Feet tall. It will bloom all summer long. Flowers are
tubular at the base flaring out to approximately 1" in diameter. Leaves are triangular
approx 3" long. Available in Yellow, Orange, White or hybrid mixes in
shades of pink or salmon. All have a purple-black
center spot and throat. from which name is derived. It can be used in hanging
baskets, trained as a ground cover, or used on trellis.
Gregorii. Orange Clock Vine, Zones 21-24; H1, H2; with
protection in zones 13,16,17; anywhere as annual. This species will rapidly twine to 6
feet high or will spread across the ground to cover a 12 foot diameter. It will
bloom almost all year long in mild climates. Flowers are tubular shaped and
brilliant orange. Leaves are Gray-Green, somewhat fuzzy and triangular in shape approx 3" long.
Plant 3-4 feet apart to cover a wire fence, 6 feet apart for ground cover or
plant it above a wall and let it cascade down. Can also be grown in hanging
baskets.
