Summer Gardening Guide:

A successful summer garden starts with choosing heat-tolerant plants, staying on top of watering, and giving your garden a little extra care. Now’s the time to plant warm-season vegetables, vibrant blooms, and drought-tolerant favorites that thrive in the Central Coast sun. With a few simple steps—like mulching, deadheading, and adjusting your watering routine—you’ll keep your garden healthy and beautiful all summer long.

What to Plant This Summer:
  • Add long-lasting coastal color with flowers like:  Salvia, Coneflower (Echinacea), Gaillardia, Coreopsis, and Zinnias.
  • Use these drought-tolerant favorites, ideal for our climate: Lavender, Yarrow, Russian Sage, Succulents & Cacti, and California Natives (such as poppies).
  • Keep your kitchen stocked with garden-fresh flavor: Tomatoes, Peppers, Basil, Cucumbers, and Eggplant.

Summer Gardening Essentials:
  • Mulching: Helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature for healthier plants.
  • Smart Watering: Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. Consider drip irrigation for efficiency.
  • Pruning & Deadheading: Trim back overgrown branches and remove spent blooms to encourage new growth.
  • Feed Your Garden: Mid-season fertilizing gives plants the nutrients they need to power through the hottest months.
